Putting the religious philosophy behind it for a moment...
How did this "practice" (as they call it) become so popular? It's even got it's own fashion line.
I tried it for the first time yesterday at the gym ...that's right, went to the gym again! That's count em, TWO times this week.
First of all there were too many women (and my brave husband) packed in a tiny room that I was getting wacked in the face, and wacking other people in return when we had to swing our arms. I didn't have my own mat, so the gym mats smelled like other people's feet.
The instructor was a wierd guy whose hair was longer on one side than the other (like this long sideburn sorta) who had sweaty armpits that soaked through his T-shirt). The music was some non-melodious chant that I only realized was the music half way through the class.
I thought it would be relaxing exercises, but the stretches were quick and awkward and straining on my back.
Overrated.

There is a movement within Christian circles on contemplative meditation that seems to have roots in Yoga and there is some controversy on its acceptance by mainline Christian churches (Willow Creek and authors such as Doug Pagitt). I don't know how Yoga can help Christian meditation...
