Being the planner that I am, and not wanting to have a second child until *I* was really ready, until I had enjoyed some period of semi-freedom, and yet before my husband would be away for 6 months, but not giving birth before that 6 months so he could be there...we were much more careful with the timing of our second pregnancy. Planned, being the key difference.
First, my doctor told me to come off the pill for 3 months before trying to conceive as there would be less chance of miscarriage (who knew!). what irony in hindsight. So I had 3 months to figure out my cycle and the perfect timing. I have NEVER kept track of my cycles, but had 3 perfect 28 day ones.
The first month we tried would have given a due date just at the end of my husband's 6 month fellowship. Period came and went. Kinda glad it didn't happen, or I'd be worried he'd miss the birth again or have to extend his fellowship. So I wasn't terribly disappointed, and we were going on vacation anyway. The second month we tried I waited for day 28, and no period. Had a leftover preggo test (obviously from almost 3 years ago, but not yet expired). Was I suppose to pee on the stick or dip the stick in a cup of urine? And for how long? Test negative. Boo.
Five days later, a friend gave me an old preg test, and negative again! But since i didn't have the instructions package, I wasn't sure if the control box was even positive. Alright, I guess this means shelling out money for a new box. For some wierd reason, I had a real aversion to paying for pregnancy tests. $10 a piece!!! Perhaps partly because I knew I could get it done for free at the lab, but then I'd have to get a doctor to order it. hassle.
Finally, about a week after I was late, the test was positive. Yay! Right on schedule.
