Dangerous

It's 9:30pm, Stephen's out at photo class. I am in my bath robe.
A loud knock comes at the door, I look through the peep hole and 3 burly men I've never seen before are at the door. I open it, they say they were there this morning fixing the heating pipes, and just needed 5 min in my apartment to check their work.
Thinking in my head that they could be rapist, killers I politely ask if they could come back later, and they insist it would only take a minute and then they could go home after a long day's work. Another one starts knocking on my neighbour's door. They do look like labor workers, but I'm sure serial killers don't wear T-shirts announcing that they are.
Still thinking they could be rapist killers, I make a split second decision to let them in (only 1 comes in). I stand at the door the entire time holding it open with my hands (so people could hear my screams?) In my head I'm thinking how messy the apartment looks and why can't he take of his dirty shoes???
He takes less than 1 min to check the place and the other 2 are in the hallway, he apologizes and leaves.
I am still feeling very uncomfortable at my decision. AHHHHH!!! Not smart!!! I could have died!!! What should I have said??? "I'm not comfortable letting you in cuz my husband is not home?" .... wouldn't that make them want to come in more if they were rapist killers? Should I just say I'm not comfortable to let you in, and just close the door? Help!

I hate it when random sketchy men approach the door when my husband is out. I've thought about calling someone on the phone and be chatting on the phone the whole time said sketchy men are around.

poor Mona! scaryy indeed! I would have talked to them while the door was still closed...and insisted they came back later... I'm glad you're safe!!!

I can totally physically hear you while reading your blog. Totally freaky. I'd probably just ignore them and hope that they'll go away.

don't answer or open the door. if it's REALLY urgent, they'll leave a msg. i'm sorry they had a long work day (and i'm sure you did as well), but personal safety and peace of mind trumps.
